Dietrich Bonhoeffer said: "The test of the morality of a society is what it does for its children. The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children." Bonhoeffer was a German theologian activist who was put to death during World War II for his involvement in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. By remembering his words, we honor his memory and the importance of all families with children everywhere.

When we honor others, we are identifying something they value and sharing their enthusiasm. Sometimes those are tangible things, like the great work they did or a new purchase they made, but other times they are intangible, like understanding their dreams and goals. And as with acknowledgment, we must make it a practice to regularly honor our own dreams and goals. If we don't take time every week to focus on what we wish for and put in some effort to move in that direction, we won't be able to make it happen. When we honor our dreams, we build a strong foundation for the future.

The cab driver's blinker was on. In fact, it had been on for quite a while. Now, I'm not a Type A personality, but it bugs me when the driver in front of me has the blinker on forever. You cautiously wait for them to turn, but they never turn.

Trying to be helpful, I said to the cabbie, "Excuse me, sir, but your blinker is on."

"Yeah, I'm going to take a left turn," he said. "I'm just not sure when."

I smiled and chalked one up for the cabbie, but his comment stayed with me: "I'm going to take some action; I'm just not sure when I'm going to do it."

I think a lot of people go through life like that. "I want to lose weight, save some money, call my mother, send a thank-you note, volunteer some time . . . I'm just not sure when." Their turn signal is on, but they aren't making any turns. In fact, they've heard themselves say "I'm going to do that" so many times that they barely notice anymore. It's like a blinker signal that keeps ticking away until they're oblivious to the sound.

So, how can we get ourselves to make those turns when we have every good intention but are stuck going in the same direction? How can we better honor our dreams and the amazing potential of our lives?
